Directions:
The spot is on the river right side where a rock extends out into the flow creating the drop. The eddy feeds back into the flow and you can see some nice whirlpools down the eddy line. There is excellent eddy service and amazing beach for loading/unloading between sets. You can spin right or left (backcut). There are several different types of rides you can take. I have had a few rides where I have gone deep and come up precisely where I dropped. These were very promising! Most rides though have been traveling ones. The drop is excellent and the accomplished squirt boater should have a very high success rate. The channel seems to be around 10-12’ deep. There are two rocks in the eddy downstream of the drop, but I haven’t tangled with them yet. It’s still something to be aware of, and you can see them when you are sitting in the eddy. I think they are pretty benign. The name is a product of the fact that the water is frigid, a result of the snowmelt from the Sawtooth mountains on the SF Payette and the dam release out of the bottom of the Deadwood River (colder than the SF). However, the temperatures are routinely 100 degrees and the water is crystal clear. Very refreshing! There is excellent camping, and a beautiful beach. Also, most people get cell service here. Not too sure yet about the high and low level limits, but the Deadwood release ends at Labor Day and it won’t be in at that time. To get here drive from Banks, ID up the SF Payette on the Banks-Lowman Highway approximately 12 miles (through Garden Valley) to the Alder Creek Bridge on the right. Cross the bridge over the SF (takeout for the Swirly Canyon) and then take the first left. Cross the little one lane bridge over Alder Creek (nearly dry during summer) and then look immediately for the “SF Payette Recreation Area” sign on the left. This is the site of excellent camping. Walk from the campsites down to the beach. The beach can be a popular spot for swimming and fishing during the summer. There are some good cliff jumps just downstream of the dropzone. You may also see some fish while here. We’ve seen several very large ones (possibly Salmon). Just downstream there was a herd of young elk in the river and an Osprey carrying a fish. This is a beautiful spot! The level is the combination of the gauges for USGS SF Payette @ Lowman, ID and Deadwood River. Links below. Notes	Fantastic session here today. Found the secret password to get into the club. She was giving up 10 foot deep rides at 10-15 seconds. The only limitations now are my own roaming skills. Entry is consistent, smooth and automatic. Best charc for me has been going down just over the top of the rock that creates the drop. On some of the best rides my bow just tapped it on the way down, or came very close. Fun watching the rock whirl by on the way down! Plan on hitting it as much as possible before the Deadwood shuts off on Labor Day.
