NotesI re-examined the spot where Steve G and I explored back in Winter. River left side of river left pourover at Wunderland. It was awesome. Nice smooth entry leading to a very smooth, mellow, and controllable ride at moderate depth - about 6 ft down for about 10 seconds. This is a quality spot, worthy of chasing. I will be back.

NotesSkunked. Too Low. Spot in front of put-in was way too low. JRs notch spot was more interesting. Eddyline at top had some potential, worthy of return with more water. Unfortunately the choice convergence with the notch flow is at the bottom end of this eddy, any ride will likely result in blowing downstream. More water needed. I won\t go again til its closer to 6.0.

Noteswell 15 ft at holtwood is no place for a low volume squirt boat. walked off the river yesterday. got out at the bridge realizing that if i continued it would turn real bad. sick eddies everywhere. scary sinkspots everywhere. kinda like paddling in cement or quicksand. we put back in 1/2 way tween bridge and takeout( walked through the woods) above the lock 15 take out there was a nice sinkspot in front of the houses. at lower water there is a rock with an eddie. i got 2 7-8 sec rides there.

NotesPaydirt! Steve G came up and probed two quality sinkspots at Holtwood today - I mostly watched and complained about the 36 degree water. First is notch convergence mentioned by JR in previous journal entry. No eddy service at this level, hoping lower is better. Second is at wunderland, but not the bossy pourover at river left-most edge. The next rock over creates a sloping wave on its river left corner, where Steve was able to lock into some long-travel rides in the 10 second neighborhood. Looks to be a quality spot. Nothing worthwhile below the bridge at this level. Seems theres nothing doing there until level gets pretty high - like 9 plus feet maybe.

NotesI did an attainment workout/exploring session. I saw at least three spots in the next channel over from the Rock-n-Roll channel that looked as if they had good DT Potential. Of course if you are going to squirt here at this level and find a good spot you are going to be in immediate stout with the water. That said, if there is water and the weather is decent I think I am heading back with the sinker next time. The time for exploration is past and the time for testing is here.

NotesLevel was absolutely minimum. Just enough water coming over the dam to make river right channels flow. There is a feature of interest right at the put-in. Eddyline at upstream end of the small flake about 50 yds out from the put-in cove. More investigation needed. I found nothing of interest below the bridge - at this level the lower channels are pretty sluggish except for a couple drops like Rock N Roll and Honey Hole.

NotesWe didnt exactly find the goods, but Ive found at least 4 locations where I expect to find the goods at the proper level. Paddled the Right-most channel below bridge with local Jon Richards. Even this level seems too high for most everything. From the top of RockNRoll Channel to the bottom of Crow Island the waters just too busy to create any predictable, consistent seams. Maybe something there at lower level. From the bottom end of Crow Island near honey-hole, and on down, there is smooth, strong current, and lots of eddylines and seams that are worth exploring. Got some fun 5-6 second rides at two different locations. Im predicting that low levels like 6-7 ft will produce the best results. I wont attempt to give directions to the spots, because no one will ever find them without a guide. More to come...

NotesI checked out the channels just off the right shore above the bridge - right around rock n roll hole. Correction: Right around POWERLINE, not Rock n Roll. One seam at the very top, left side of the right-most channel looked promising, but I was in plastic, so no results to verify. At the bottom right of the same channel is a very powerful surging seam that looks like an oblivion charc. Re-inspected wunderland. It was too low for the usual seam at river left corner, but the next rock over formed a pourover that looked like an exact replica of the Mystery Machine. It could go.

NotesPaddled through the tailrace again. It was 5 ft lower in the channel. Not due to river level, but because the powerplant had just cranked down the water. Banks were still wet and slimy. Theres nothing worth visiting in the tailrace channel - no good seams, no good convergences, just big messy boils pushing off the walls of the channel. Downstream of the bridge though is a huge convergence that I suspect is the setting of the scary stories Ive heard. Its where the tailrace current turns right and rejoins the main flow of the river at the tip of a narrow island. This is also the point where the shallow bottom in the main channel drops off into the deep cut of the tailrace - a good formula for DT. Its washed out in the google map image, but you can see it well in the mapquest image. Second island downstream of bridge just off river left shore.

NotesI paddled the tailrace today, from the access stairs to just below the bridge. Very fast, deep, large volume of water flowing through this channel. Very big, powerful, sometimes scary looking seams and whirlpools form along the River Right shore. Unpredictable boils and surges suggest that there is a lot of topography on the bottom. Being solo, and in uncharted territory, I didnt try to sink too much. Perhaps it would be better with less water.

NotesTotally skunked RocknRoll Channel was a trickle but the last ledge looks like it would be good with more water. The other channels below the bridge were sluggish and shallow, I didnt bother visiting. Top of storm channel has remnants of an old dam that looked promising, but produced no results.

NotesI got my first glimpses of the river right channels below the bridge. Reminiscent of Mather Gorge. This archipelago definitely warrants further exploration. lots of potential DT spots - sampled one where I was able to sink to my shoulders quite easily. Very cold water kept my appetite low.

Notesthe spot nozel spoke of is river left pour over above rock and roll.scary downtime the level-playspot 1 must be in.the tailrace is dangerous terminal downtime could be achieved there at the whirlpools( i wont go back there again) at the group of rocks above powerline on river left there is a good spot there is a 2 ft notch running through the riverleft rock. just river rt of that notch .lol a small pourover creates a nice sint spot where 2 eddies converge. i am not sure of the underwater structures there. but never had a bad experience.
